People look forward to this day all year long, and on October 3rd, the time finally arrived. Growers from Bruges, Lommel, Essen, Brecht, Tongeren, Wilrijk, Petegem-aan-de-Leie, and elsewhere made their way to Kasterlee.
Tomatoes, giant watermelons, long gourds… Around eight different types of fruits were measured and weighed—who has the biggest one?
Highlight of the day, of course, is when weighing the giant pumpkins. This year, the top three spots were all claimed by members of the Pompoenengenootschap Kasterlee:
- Herman Boonen: 945,5kg
- Luc Berrens: 930,5kg
- Toon Hermans: 909,5kg
Among the green giants—the squashes—Jens Segaert from Bruges managed to secure a spot in the top three, holding his own against the pumpkin enthusiasts from Kasterlee:
- Luc Vanheuckelom: 800,5kg
- Luc Berrens: 742kg
- Jens Segaert: 580kg
On to the next events: the pumpkin market and the pumpkin regatta. Here are some photos of the weigh-off:
